City Walk Fantasies is an experimental audiovisual project made in a stream-of-consciousness mode, tracing what it felt like to live between Beijing and New York. The work moves through three pieces, each starting from a different relationship between sound and image. Urban Aquarium opens with five sound compositions built around a personal sound logo and four impressions of New York at different times of day, then folds them into a single mix paired with a video collage. Steam Wave reverses the order: I recorded street sounds on a night in Beijing, translated them into motion graphics, then used those visuals as a score to compose a new sound piece in Pro Tools from twenty short field recordings. Ridiculous? Hilarious? begins as an improvised song recorded with a friend, remixed in Pro Tools to register the texture of New York, and given a video collage in response. Together the three pieces investigate how sound and image can take turns leading one another, and how the everyday material of a city, street noise, songs, footage, can be reassembled into a personal cartography of two places.
This piece, originally titled Dreams in NYC, was selected for the Personaland's “Personal Archeology” show.
